Fox head with geometric lines on forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic fox head faces forward, shaded with fine stippled dots that give the fur texture and depth. Below the chin, crisp black geometric lines form a faceted, open polygon that fades into the neck area. The work is entirely black and grey, and the tattoo fills the frame against a pale textured fabric in the background.

Dear Marnie, the gulls have finally given up on the harbour wall and gone to bother the chip shop instead, so I am writing this on the back of a crab-pot invoice with the good pen, which is the only one that doesn't skip on the damp. Three nights now the Estrella has come in with nothing in her hold but salt and one lost glove, and the skipper keeps saying the fish have moved out past the Dogger, further than the fuel will carry us. Nobody says what that means for the wages.

Yesterday, on the slip at Ardmore, I found a fox. Not a live one, thank God, but a wee one carved in the bottom of a lobster crate someone had left out. Whoever cut it had a steady hand and no patience at all, because the eyes were left almost blank and the ears were too big. I took it home and scrubbed it, and the ghost of it stayed on my palm all evening like a splinter I couldn't pick out.

I've decided to tell you the truth, which is that I am going to walk up to Mrs Abernethy's on Thursday and ask her to ink that fox on me, the way I'd want it. Fine dots for the fur, so it looks like it's breathing in the lamplight. And round its throat, straight black lines, the sort you'd draw to find your way back to shore in fog. You'd call it daft. Write back and call me daft. I'll bring the letter with me.
