The fox has taken to sleeping under the quince tree again, right at the foot of the bottom row where the windfalls gather. Dad always said a fox that naps in daylight has nothing to fear from us, and I believe him more now he's gone. She sits up straight with her eyes shut like a schoolgirl pretending to pray, and the pale heart on her chest is the same shape as the one scratched inside the lid of the biscuit tin you buried in the hedge when we were small.

We had the early pickers in on Tuesday. Mr Ashdown brought his boy with the crates on the cart, and the boy kept asking why the fox never runs off. I told him foxes know who is working and who is only looking. The leaves are already going copper at the edges, and the white rose Mum planted by the gate has finally put out one bloom on a curling stem, just like the one on the old calendar in the scullery.

Last night I stood at the back door and found the star over the orchard, the one that comes up before the first frost, and I thought of you on the train with your coat buttoned to the chin. I am not asking you to come home for the harvest. I am only saying the trees will hold their fruit until the end of September, and so will I.
