A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox comes in on the third frost of the month, while you are still fixing a gilt mirror for Mrs Abernethy. You hear the bell above the shop door, then claws on the floorboards, then a small cough, as if a clerk were clearing his throat before presenting a bill.

It sets a carved oval on your bench. The leaves are blistered, the gilt gone the colour of stewed tea, and a tin crown sits at the top, bent where something heavy once sat on it. Red flowers, the papery kind that grow along the edge of the wood, are tangled in the scrolls. Inside the oval there is no picture, only a pale square of wallpaper where a portrait used to hang.

You work through the night with a fine sable brush and a pot of size. You strip the blisters, lay on new green, and rub the crown until it catches the lamp. The fox paces the rim of the bench the whole time, and once it sneezes a red petal onto your sleeve, as if to remind you the flowers are its own business.

At dawn you hang the frame in the window, and the fox takes its place inside it without being asked, ears just touching the scrolled crown, chin tucked where the portrait's face should be. Outside, the wood is grey and silent. Mrs Abernethy's mirror still needs its back panel, and you have a feeling she will not mind waiting.
