Seated Ganesha tattoo on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A seated Ganesha with an elephant head, four arms and a crown fills the centre of the upper back, shown from behind the wearer. The design is drawn in fine black outlines with grey shading on the robes, jewellery and arms. Small red details appear on the forehead mark and along the trunk, while the rest of the tattoo is monochrome against warm skin, with a red patterned garment at the right edge.

Sit closer to the fire, the lot of you, and mind the draught from that door, because the snow has no manners and will come in if you let it. Ask Mrs Pell at the bar for the good cider. Now. You want the one about the pass, and the elephant-headed man who would not let the coach through.

Three days the drifts had sat across Hollin Pass, and the coaching company had sent word that no wheel would turn until the thaw. Inside the inn at the top, a clerk named Tobias Greave had a ledger of debts and a bad temper. He had been counting coins for a week when a traveller walked in out of the white, shaking a mantle of snow, carrying a sack of sweets wrapped in leaves and a small grey mouse on a string. He had four arms, a crown that caught the lamplight like a second hearth, and a long curled trunk.
He did not ask for a room. He asked for a pen. Tobias laughed, but the stranger sat down cross-legged on the flagstones, wrote one line on the back of the ledger, and pushed it across. It said only: begin the road where you stand.
So Tobias did. He shovelled the lane to the stable, then the path to the well, then the step of the widow across the way, and each time he looked up the traveller had already moved on to the next thing that needed clearing. By the third morning the drifts had softened, and the coach came through the pass with its lamps still lit.
The traveller was gone. On the table lay the pen and the ledger, the page turned to a blank space. Tobias never found the sweets, but the mouse, they say, is still tied to the inn's door, and no one has yet had the heart to untie it.
