Sitting dog outline with red heart on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A single continuous black line forms the outline of a dog seated in profile, with its head turned slightly upward. A small solid red heart sits to the left of the dog's chest. The tattoo is centred on the inner wrist against a plain white background, with plenty of empty space around it.

The rain had started before Ines reached the tail, which was the part she always rushed. She kept the chalk moving without lifting it, the way her grandfather had taught her on the steps of the fish market, one unbroken line that began at the shoulder of a dog and ended where it began. Under the sodium lamp outside the shuttered pet shop on Tanner Street, the outline sat up straight and watched the empty road as if it expected someone to come round the corner.

Nobody came, except at half past one, when a night cleaner from the bakery across the way stopped with a bin bag in each hand. He was called Dario and wore his headphones round his neck. He didn't say anything about the drawing. He set the bags down, took a red stub from his pocket, and pressed a small heart beside the dog's chest, shading it with his thumb until it looked almost wet.
'My mum had one like that,' he said eventually. 'Sat by the door every night waiting for the bus.' Ines nodded and kept her eyes on the pavement. The rain was already thinning the lines, pulling the chalk into grey rivers that ran toward the drain.
By morning the street was clean and the shop's shutter had been rolled up. Ines walked back past at seven, expecting nothing. The dog had gone, washed into the gutter, but the heart was still there, faint and pink against the wet stone, and someone had stepped around it so carefully that the pavement looked as if it had been left for them.
