Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

An infinity symbol combined with an outlined heart, with the words thick and thin written in script along the loop of the infinity. The linework is fine and the heart is filled with purple ink while the infinity loop is dark blue-grey. The tattoo is centred on smooth pale skin against a busy multicoloured fabric background.

The stew has gone thick again, and Mags is already reaching for the kettle to loosen it before the watch comes off the deck. You tell her to leave it. In eleven years she has never once let a pot sit untended, and you have never once stopped her, so you wipe your hands on the tea towel and watch the steam fog the porthole.

The trawler has been out nine days in a North Sea that will not settle. Everything in the galley slides when she rolls: tins, ladles, the two of you. Mags says a rough crossing is only a test of the stock. You say the stock has never been tested by a deckhand with a bandaged thumb who wants his dinner in five minutes. She laughs, and it is the only sound on board that does not need mending.

The skipper's boy comes down with a bucket of potatoes and a face like wet paper. You give him a bowl and a spoon and tell him the trick is patience. When the galley lurches and a pan of onions goes skating across the deck, Mags catches it with one boot and doesn't spill a single slice. Neither of you says well done. You just keep stirring, one hand on the rail, the other on the pot, the way you have on every bad crossing since the year you both lost your fathers to the same winter.

When the boat finally noses into Lowestoft harbour, the dock lights are swimming in the rain. You find the lid of the big pot later, scrubbed and drying on the hook. Someone has scratched a loop into the dull metal, a figure eight lying on its side, and under it, in Mags's small careful hand, the word both.
