Celiac awareness ribbon with No Grain, No Pain lettering
Lettering · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo on a lower limb shows a looped teal, blue and green awareness ribbon framing the words No Grain, with Celiac Disease above and No Pain below in black script. The ribbon is shaded with soft gradients and a dark outline, and the lettering is bold and clearly legible. The close, slightly angled shot is set against a tiled floor, with the ink filling most of the frame.

Nobody had asked for it. Nobody had asked for much, which was the trouble with reunions.

Dean Pryce found her by the urn. He had gone bald in the shape of a horseshoe and still stood like the lad who once set fire to the cricket bag. "Is that the one from Home Ec?" he said. "The one that came out like a roof tile?"
"Different recipe," she said. "Different oven. Thirty years of practice."
He took a slice without asking, the way he always had, and chewed for a long time while the DJ played Wonderwall for the third time. Then he turned the tin lid over. Pinned under the masking tape was a faded teal ribbon she had drawn on a bakery card in 1998, with NO GRAIN, NO PAIN written across it in her own wobbly capitals, back when her hands were always dusted white and nobody believed a word she said about bread.
"You kept that," he said.
"It was the only thing I got right that year." She pulled the tape loose and pressed the card flat against the lid. "Take the tin. Bring it back with something worse in it."
