Infinity symbol with love script on foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black infinity symbol sits on the top of a bare foot, with the word Love written in cursive script across its centre. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The skin tone is warm and the background is a pale, blurred white, with a silver beaded anklet visible at the left edge.

Dear Hettie,

The ferry's been cancelled again, so I am writing this at the kitchen table with the lamp turned low and a pot of tea going cold beside the tide tables. Your mother's sign went up above the bakery this morning. Mrs Pollard stood in the road with her arms folded and told me the L leaned too far to the left, and I told her a letter that leans is only a letter that is tired.
She wanted a sideways eight in front of the word, the sort that means forever when you see it painted on a hull. Mr Kerr at the chandlery says it means nothing at all, only a sum the sea keeps doing. I drew it first in chalk on the yard wall, then in ink on paper, and the trouble was the join. Every loop I tried ended in a little knot where the line crossed itself, like bramble caught on a gate. In the end I let the brush run through the middle without lifting, the way your father used to walk the dog round the churchyard, and the word came out of that knot as if it had been waiting there all along.
When I finished I stood back and could not find where I had started. The first curl and the last curl sat so close that the paint seemed to hold its breath. Mrs Pollard asked me to sign it. I wrote my initials in the corner and then, because she was watching, I added nothing else, since there was no end to put a date on.
Come home at the weekend if the boat runs. There is a tin of gold leaf on the shelf with your name on the lid, and I will show you how to start a loop so that you never have to finish it.
Love, Tom
