Semicolon and word tattoo designs price sheet
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A printed sheet lists semicolon tattoo designs at $21 and semicolon word tattoos at $30, with a row of single semicolon symbols at the top. The word designs, including Warrior, Live, Let it go, Believe, Continue, Strength, Fighter and Survivor, appear in several handwritten and printed lettering styles in black ink on white paper. The layout is a simple list with rows of text, and a note at the foot says the offer runs until the end of August and that alterations may be extra.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ruth had been told twice that the semicolon was the only mark on the sheet that mattered, so she set it first, before the headings, before the red rule Mr Dunne liked drawn across the middle. Her hands were still cold from the yard where the press lived. The type case gave her a dozen of the little hooks and dots, most of them chipped at the tail, and she sorted through them under the strip light like someone hunting for a lost earring.

The word list came next. Mr Dunne wanted Warrior and Survivor in the heavy slab face and Live and Believe in a loose hand he had copied from a birthday card in 1986. He stood behind her with a mug going cold and tapped the proof. 'Put the semicolon where the sentence wants to keep going,' he said. 'Not at the end. Nobody needs a full stop on a thing like that.' Ruth assumed he meant the spacing and didn't ask.
By nine she had run off a hundred copies on the old Heidelberg, and the ink came up grey at the edges the way it always did in the damp. She pinned one above the till, where a woman in a green coat stopped to read it, laughed at the Let it go row, then laughed again at herself for laughing. Ruth was looking at the chipped semicolon she had put back in the case with its tail turned to the wall, the one that had printed like a comma that had decided to be braver.
Mr Dunne counted the sheets, found them all right, and said nothing, which from him was praise. Ruth stuck the spoiled proof on the inside of the cupboard door, where it stayed until August, still unfinished and still refusing to stop.
