Tattoo request form with anchor, dreamcatcher and feather
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
The sheet is a satirical printed form with pen-style line drawings of an anchor, a dreamcatcher with feathers, a single feather, an infinity symbol with the word Word, and a flock of birds. The linework is fine and sketched, with no shading beyond light hatching. The drawings are in black on cream paper, and the composition places the designs above blank lines for writing and a placement list.

The form had been photocopied so many times that its anchor looked like a rusted gate, and Maud Heskett kept it pinned above the sink for a month before she admitted it was funny. Typical girl, it said across the top, as if the whole of Scarrow Bay were one kind of person. Ribs, muffin top, upside down probably. She had told her nephew Col to take it back to whichever fair he had stolen it from.

Agnes Brand came in on a Tuesday with rain in her hair and no form at all. She laid a photograph of a trawler called the Little Mercy on the counter and asked for birds. Seven of them, she said, flying north off the stern, each one a different size, because her boys had been different sizes when they went out on her husband's boat and had never come back in. Maud did not make a joke. She sat on the stool with the stencil paper and drew the birds one at a time, pencil light, and left the feather until last.
When the drawing was done, Maud turned the old form over and, in the blank space where the quote should have gone, wrote the name of the boat in careful capitals. Agnes read it twice and nodded. Outside, the wind worried at the shutter, and the anchor above the sink looked, for once, as though it meant what it said.
