Semicolon quote on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a raised fist showing the inner wrist, with a tattoo of the words 'my story isn't over' set in a serif typeface. Semicolon marks frame the phrase at the start and end, and the black ink is solid and crisp against the skin. The black and white image sits on a bedsheet printed with black stars, which fill the background around the arm.

The customs clerk at Halfway Bridge kept a stamp with a cracked brass head, and the crack made every mark it pressed look unfinished. Where the stamp was meant to close a line with a full stop, the ink came down as a dot with a curl hanging beneath it, a pause rather than an end. The captains off the salt barges grumbled that their papers looked half written, and the Chancellor's men sent letters asking for a new one.

Sofia Harrow, who kept the ledger for her uncle, never sent the letters on. One wet March a woman came over the planks with no papers at all, a boy of about six asleep against her shoulder and a tin lantern swinging from one hand. Sofia opened the book, wrote their names in her careful hand, and pressed the cracked stamp hard. "Not finished," she told the woman, who had not asked. "Only held until someone decides."
Years later the boy came back across the bridge with a leather satchel, grown and sunburnt from the cutting fields on the far bank. He stopped at the booth and laid his papers down. Every line still ended in that curled tail, and beside his name was a second entry in Sofia's hand, dated the week the Chancellor's men finally came to collect the stamp: "Still pending." He smiled and asked her to stamp it again.
