Semicolon quote on the side of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a foot showing the tattoo in a lowercase sans serif typeface reading "; my story isn't over", with a leading semicolon. The lines are solid and even, with the ink sitting dark and clear against the skin. The text runs horizontally across the foot, with the skin, a light fabric and a dark surface filling the rest of the frame.

The type drawer at Pennock's Printing on Carrick Quay had forty years of dust in its corners, and Ada Pennock still swept it out each Monday before the boats came in. She knew which letters went missing first. The semicolons always went. Nobody ordered them, so nobody thought to replace them, and the small hooked tails wore thin from being picked up and put back.

The week the harbour committee asked for a notice for the lifeboat fund, Ada found the last semicolon wedged behind the lead quoins, face down and furred with grey. She held it up to the window. Her father had told her a semicolon meant the writer wasn't finished, only pausing for breath, and that a good compositor never let a sentence look more finished than it was. She set it into the line without thinking about why.
That night she locked the forme, pulled a proof and read it by the paraffin lamp. The boats are out; keep the lamp lit; my story isn't over. Her nephew Tom laughed when he saw it and said the committee would never sign off on such a line. Ada inked the type again and pinned the sheet above the till, where the fishermen would read it on their way out to the water.
By June the fund had doubled. When the last boat came in at dusk, Ada left the window lamp burning, went back to the drawer and began sorting the next set of letters.
