Five outline stars on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of the top of a foot with five outlined stars of different sizes arranged in a diagonal line from near the toes towards the ankle. The linework is solid and even, with the interiors left as bare skin. The plain grey background and soft lighting keep the focus on the tattoos.

You spot Miss Okonedo before she spots you, which is how it always was at Fenwick Lane. Thirty years on, she still counts heads the way she counted the Year Six register, her lips moving.

"You still owe me a star," she says. In 1994 she gave each of you a sheet of gold card and a lesson on the Plough, and you drew yours in biro because the glitter pens had run dry. You were the only one who left the middle blank, claiming a star was just the edge of something. She laughs about it now, and you find you do not.
Someone dims the lights and a projector sputters onto the wall, showing the old class photograph, a grid of faces squinting into March sun. You find yourself counting the gaps between the children and joining them with your eye, five points running from the front row toward the door where the caretaker stood jingling his keys.
Afterwards she walks you to the car park and presses a folded card into your hand. Inside are five outlined stars of different sizes, their insides left empty. "I never filled mine either," she says. "Kept waiting for someone to tell me what goes in the middle." You sit in the car with the engine off and the card on your knee, watching the hall lights go out one window at a time.
