A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Master Rhys gave me the chisel in March, after the lad from Hereford had cut the lettering backwards and the widow had sent him down the hill with his tools in a sack. The stone was grey and wet, and the wind came through the empty window of the solar as if it still had somewhere to be. I was to cut a heart into the east lintel, no bigger than a man's palm, and inside it six letters stacked one above another, each line as fine as a horsehair.

Gwen Ashby came up each morning with her shawl pulled tight and stood in the courtyard where the roof had fallen in, watching my hands. She wanted no shading, no curls, nothing that would catch the rain and blur. Rhys wanted the spacing wider, said the letters would weather unevenly, but she only shook her head and said whoever came up the hill after the roof was gone would read it plain or not at all. So I measured twice, scored the guide lines with a nail, and worked the chisel so lightly that the dust hardly rose.

On the ninth day the heart was finished. The crows had gone quiet in the ivy and the light came in low across the flags. Gwen climbed the broken stair on her own, slower than she used to, and stood beneath the lintel with her head tipped back. She laid her palm flat against the stone, just below the carved heart, and held it there while the sun found the letters one by one. "There," she said. "Now it's a door nobody can lock."
