Black script lettering reading 'My story isn't over' with a large semicolon beneath the words, tattooed on an ankle.

Semicolon and script 'My story isn't over'

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black script phrase reading 'My story isn't over' runs horizontally across the skin, with a large solid semicolon placed at its centre, one dot above the line and the comma below. The linework is clean and even, with solid black ink and no visible shading or colour. The tattoo fills the centre of a close, slightly angled photo of the lower leg against a plain background.

Brother Osric,

The abbot has ordered the old fen chronicle copied fresh, since the damp has got into the vellum and half the pages are turning to paste. You will have the copying of it through the winter, so I write to warn you about folio nine, where Brother Tobin left his mark before he died.

The entry is for the year the water came up the nave. Tobin wrote that the flood rose to the third step, that the brothers carried the reliquary up into the loft, and that the eels were found in the choir stalls for a week after. Then, where any other scribe would have put a full stop, he set a dot above a comma, a small mark we use only to say a thought carries on. Abbot Gerent called it a blot and wanted it scraped away. I went down to the cold room to find the old exemplar before anyone scraped anything.

The exemplar has the same mark in the same place, and the sentence goes on past it. The water fell by morning, it says, and the bells rang again for Lauds, and the brothers went down to the mud with buckets and spades and began again. Tobin had counted the losses and then refused to let the record end on them.

Copy it as he made it. Leave the mark where he set it. When you reach the end of the year, you will find the chronicle does not stop there, and neither should you.

Your brother in the cold room, Aldric
