Semicolon tattoo on the ankle
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black semicolon sits on the side of the ankle, just below the ankle bone. The mark is simple and bold with clean edges and no shading. The photo is a close-up of a bare foot against a plain pale background with a blurred floral fabric in the corner.

Mr Halloran rang the brass bell on the counter twice before he spoke, which was how I knew the complaint had been ironed flat and brought in with his good coat. He laid the notice on the blotter between us. I had typed it at seven that morning on the Imperial: the flooded line to Thornbury, and the replacement buses from the forecourt. In the middle of it I had put a semicolon where he wanted a full stop.

'Two sentences,' he said. 'Two sentences, Miss Ferris, with a point between them like a fence. The public cannot be expected to climb a fence.' I told him the first half was a closure and the second half was the way home, and that the two belonged to each other. A full stop would send people off the platform thinking the bus was a rumour. He tapped the word line where I had struck it through, then the word forecourt, then the clock above the door, which had stopped at ten past nine some weeks before and never been fixed.
I kept the carbon. Years later, when the station was boarded up and the Imperial sold for scrap, I saw a copy pinned inside a bus shelter in the rain. The ink had run, but the little black mark still sat between the two halves, holding them apart and together at once. Nobody had torn it down. Outside, the buses kept coming, one half of the sentence after the other.
