The sycamore keys had been coming down all October, and by the second Saturday they lay in drifts along the skirting of the Regal Rooms like something the building was shedding. Upstairs, Ferdie was counting the waltz for Pearl, who kept stepping on her own feet. "One, two, three. One, two, three. Don't look down, love, the floor isn't going anywhere." Pearl had come every Thursday since the summer, learning to lead because Ferdie's knee had gone and the class needed someone to hold the frame while he sat on a stool and shouted numbers. She said little and counted hard, and Ferdie had stopped asking why she never once smiled at the mirror.

Maureen climbed the back stairs with the keys in her apron pocket and stood in the doorway until the music looped round again. She watched the second beat go wrong, watched Pearl's weight tip, and watched her catch it. Then Maureen held out her palm. "Here. Keep these on you. Every time you turn, roll one between your fingers and let the other two keep time."

Pearl took them without a word and tucked them into her cuff. The next turn, Ferdie saw her lift her wrist once, quick as a dropped stitch, and her feet found the three beats cleanly. Two of the seeds leaned together in the turn, and the third hung a little apart, the way a partner does when they have finally learned the lead.
