The tide was out when Jory Penhale came up the shingle to ask Morwenna Tregear to marry him, and the old women of Polmear said the sea would want something for that. They always said it. Morwenna laughed and said the sea could have her bad temper, since it was the only thing she had in plenty.

On the wedding morning gulls' feathers blew in through the church door and the vicar's book would not stay open. Jory's mother pressed a thin silver ring into his palm and told him to give it to the bride at the tide line, where the old custom said a marriage was finished. So they walked down together in their good boots, and the water was already running up the sand in a long curl.

Morwenna knelt, took the knife from her apron, and drew a single wave in the wet sand with the tip of her finger. It was one quick stroke that dipped, lifted and turned back on itself. Then she slid the ring onto her finger and held her hand up to the sea. The water swelled, reached the mark she had made, and drew back without taking a thing.

Jory asked her afterwards what she had promised the water. She said she had promised to walk to the same beach every spring and draw the same wave again, so the sea would know where to find her. She did, for fifty-one years, and the ring never left her hand.
