Semicolon tattoo on the back of the neck
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph from behind shows a person with short dark hair, with one hand resting on the top of their head. A small, solid black semicolon sits at the centre of the nape, below the hairline. The ink is black and the background is softly blurred, with an ornate railing and warm tones behind the subject.

Mairead had set the same sentence four times that week, and each time the press swallowed the full stop before she could reach it. The shop sat above the harbour on Inish Mor, where the ferry came twice a day when the wind allowed, and where the cabinets still held lead type older than the pier. Her grandfather had called the semicolon the coward's stop, a pause for people who could not commit to an ending. He had said it while tilting a case of sorts toward the window, squinting at a c that looked like an e.

On Thursday a woman came off the boat with a hatbox and a folded proof, asking whether the shop could reprint a notice for the church hall. The notice had broken in the middle: the bridge was shut; the dancing would go on at the schoolhouse. Mairead read it twice, frowning at the gap. The woman laughed at her face. "It's not a question," she said. "Just wait for the second half."
That evening Mairead locked the forme and picked out a single semicolon from the drawer, a small black nib of metal no bigger than a grain of rice. It looked too slight to hold anything up. She inked it on a scrap of card and pressed it against the bottom of the proof, and the line she had been holding stayed open, waiting for its second clause, and she found she was content to let it wait.
