Three chevrons behind the ear
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her hair tied in a bun is shown from the side and slightly behind, with her ear turned toward the camera. Three small stacked chevron marks are drawn in thin black linework just behind the ear. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the plain background of a wooden door and window blind keeps the focus on the small tattoo.

Old Ned Carrow kept the flock on that farm, and he had a way of marking things. Every gatepost on Low Garth bore his cuts, little chevrons pointing the way the sheep should go home, so a man could find his road when the lamp was out.

That February he had three ewes missing and the light going. He didn't wait for the dog. He took the lantern and his mother's old knife, and he cut a fresh chevron into the post at the top of the lane, then another below it, then a third, pointing down toward the beck. Stacked like that, they meant follow me down, and nothing else. His wife thought he was daft. She said the snow would bury any mark by morning.
He came back at midnight with all three ewes walking in front of him, steam rising off their backs, and the dog trotting at his heel as proud as a lord. The marks were still there at first light, dusted white but sharp as the day they were cut. Ned never cut another one in his life, and the farm kept his posts as they were, every arrow pointing to the one gate that was always left open.
