Pink bow tattoo on the nape of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Mixed · Photo

The photograph shows the back of a woman's head and neck in a hair salon, with a layered blonde bob. A small pink bow sits on the nape of the neck, drawn with thin dark outlines and simple shading. A second, darker tattoo is partly visible near the shoulder under the hair, and the background includes salon chairs, mirrors and a tiled floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit down, and mind the step, the bottom one has been loose since the flood. At the Halden Pass there was a barrier painted red and white, and a customs man called Ferenc who kept a tin of barley sugar in his drawer and never once offered it to anybody. Every cart that came up the road had to open its load for him.

One October a girl came through with a mule and a wicker basket, and under a folded blanket in the basket was a spool of pink silk ribbon no wider than a finger. Ferenc lifted the blanket with the tip of his pen and asked what it was for. She said it was for a bow, and the bow was for her grandmother, who had tied one every Sunday for fifty years and was now too frail to reach the knot herself.

Ferenc turned the spool over in his hands for a long time. Then he said the law had nothing to say about ribbon, and he waved the mule through without a stamp. Years afterwards, when everyone else had forgotten the girl, he still called it the only thing he ever let pass without a word.

The girl came back the next spring with a photograph. Her grandmother sat in a chair by a window, and a pink bow sat at the back of her head, slightly crooked, exactly how she liked it. Ferenc kept that photograph in his drawer beside the barley sugar, and nobody ever asked him why, and that is how I know the story is true.
