Ornamental pattern on shaved scalp
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A side view of a shaved head showing a dark grey ornamental tattoo on the scalp above and behind the ear. The design has a soft, scrolling, dotted pattern with a curved tail reaching down towards the nape, and the edges appear slightly blurred. The ink is black and grey on a light background of shaved skin, with a shaved line framing the design and longer hair on top.

She'd sit a child on a stool, shave a clean line above the ear, and with a pot of ink and a needle no thicker than a wasp's leg she'd dot a comet onto the bare skin. Little dots, close as rain, drifting from the crown down to the nape, where the tail curled off like the last spark of a firework. Folk paid her in buttons and pressed pennies. Nobody asked why she bothered, because the children climbed down those wagon steps standing a half inch taller.
Now Nell Harker came up the steps one wet Thursday. Her brother had gone off with the Ferris carnival and not come back, and everyone had told her he was dead in a ditch somewhere. Winifred listened, said nothing, and inked a comet's tail that ran past the ear and pointed the way the carnival had gone. 'Follow the tail,' she said, 'and mind the dots. Every dot's a place you stop and ask.'
Nell walked those roads for nine weeks. At every crossroads she found a dot: a kind woman with a lamp, a stable boy who knew the name, a fiddler who had played at the same fair. And the brother? Well. That's a tale for another night, and the organ's starting up again, so off you go to the dodgems.
