Semicolon tattoo on the inner wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single small semicolon is tattooed on the inner wrist, with its dot and comma shape filled in solid black ink. The mark is simple and sits slightly off centre below the base of the hand. The background is a dark patterned fabric, and the image is taken at close range with soft indoor lighting.

The rain has found the gap in your tarpaulin again, and it drips onto the tray of loose type you are sorting for Mrs Okafor, who has kept a stall of old printers' sorts at Castlefield Market for longer than you have been alive. Her cases are dented brass and oak, and the letters sit backwards in your hands. You pick out an e, a q, a stubborn little ligature, and you learn to read them upside down before you learn to read them the right way round.

Near closing, a man in a wet anorak stops at the stall and asks for a semicolon. Not a whole fount, just the one. Mrs Okafor laughs and says nobody has asked for one in forty years, but she has a box of them from a printer in Hull that went under, and she tips them onto the oilcloth. You hand him the one with the chipped comma tail. He turns it over under the lamp and says his grandfather set a whole local paper with these, and that the mark is a pause you are allowed to take without stopping altogether.

You watch him walk off into the drizzle with the letter folded in his palm, the stall lamps buzzing, the awning sagging with water. Mrs Okafor counts the box and finds one short. She says nothing, only slides the rest back into their compartments, and you understand she is leaving the gap on purpose, the way you leave a sentence open when the next thought is not ready yet.
