Small spade symbol on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black spade symbol sits on the inner wrist, shown with the hand raised and palm facing the camera. The shape is filled in with no shading or linework visible, and the ink is crisp and dark against the skin. The background is softly blurred, with a green wall and a light window area, keeping the focus on the wrist and hand.

Dear Tom,

The canal froze over on Tuesday, so we have been tied up below Stoke Lock with nothing to do but play cards in the cabin. Dad lost his tobacco tin to Mrs Pyke on the first night and has been sulking ever since. I have been winning, mostly with the ace of spades, which he swears is unlucky. He says the black suit belongs to gravediggers, and that no bargeman worth his pole would lay that card on the table while a funeral barge was passing.
Yesterday I walked up to the towpath to see if the ice would bear a boy's weight. Two lads from the Sundowner were fishing through a hole with a bent pin. They wanted a game for their pennies, so I sat on an upturned crate and dealt. One of them, a thin boy called Ruben, kept glancing at the spade I had inked on my wrist to keep my own nerve. When he asked what it was for, I told him it was my lucky card, and that I had never once needed a second one.
He laughed and said I was a gambler's daughter after all. I told him the only trick I know is to keep your hands steady when the water is cold, and to never bet more than the lock keeper would let you carry home. He won two pennies off me before the light went, and then he gave them back and said he had only been testing whether I would notice.
Write soon. Mum says to wrap up warm, and that the kettle is still ours if the ice cracks.
Yours, Nell
