Small semicolon tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black semicolon sits on the inner wrist, near the base of the hand. The dots are crisp and simply shaded, with no surrounding ornament. The hand is raised toward the top of the frame, with a bare foot visible at the lower left against a grey wooden deck.

You are three rows into the box hedge when the boy from next door leans over the fence to ask what the little black mark on your gate is supposed to be. It is a semicolon, you tell him, and it means the sentence has not finished, only paused to catch its breath. He wants to know what sentence. You say the one carved into the potting shed by the previous owner, a retired schoolmaster called Mr Pell, who believed a garden was a long argument with grammar and that the best arguments never quite ended.

Mr Pell's shed is still full of his labels. Every plant in the borders has one, written in capitals so fierce you can read them from the kitchen window. FOXGLOVE, which he considered a sentence in its own right. SEA HOLLY; MIND THE SPINES, which he insisted was two thoughts and therefore needed the pause. Each spring you find another label under the nettles, and each spring you argue with him out loud about whether the rhubarb deserves a full stop. He never answers. The rhubarb never lies down.
By Thursday the seed catalogue has arrived with an apology from the printer for a comma that went missing from the sweet pea entry. You phone them to complain, read the sentence to the girl on the line twice, and hear a long silence at the other end. "Yes," she says eventually, "I suppose it does need a semicolon." You put the phone down, walk out into the wet grass, and write a fresh label in Mr Pell's fierce capitals, because he would have wanted the pause kept.
