Black and grey semicolon tattoo with a swirled shaded dot and tail, above the words Our story isnt over yet, on an upper arm.

Semicolon with quote on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey semicolon tattoo sits on the upper arm, with a shaded swirl above it and a second, larger swirl forming the dot and tail of the mark. The words Our story isnt over yet run in a serif typeface between the two shapes. The shading is soft and smudged, with darker ink in the swirls and lighter greys across the skin.

Ida Plunkett had worked the same tarpaulin pitch at Coldharbour Market for thirty-one years, and she knew the sound rain made on canvas the way other women knew their husbands' snoring. On the wet Thursday her hip gave out, and she sat on an upturned crate with a card in her lap that read CLOSED FOR THE MONTH.

Her grandson Tomasz printed the signs at the back of the bakery on his cousin's machine. He had set the words in an old serif face because she liked serifs, and then, showing off, he had added a line beneath in smaller type: our story isn't over yet. Between the two lines sat a semicolon, a fat black mark with a dot drifting above it. "It's a full stop that thought better of it," he said. She told him a full stop was a full stop and she had no second thoughts left to spare.

The stall stayed shut. The chip shop boy asked whether the wool was finished, and Ida said no, not yet, which surprised them both. Each morning she unfolded the card and read it again. The dot hung above the line like a breath held before a word, and the tail curled down as if the pen had only just lifted away.

On the eighth Thursday she hauled the tarpaulin back, wiped the trestle with a damp rag and laid out her skeins in rows of tangerine and slate. She pinned the card to the pole where the rain could reach it, then went back to the crate to wait for the first customer.
