Old Teodor kept the milestones on the Salt Road, a hundred and twelve miles of white dust between two wells that did not like each other. Every spring he rode out with a chisel and a bucket of lime and cut the distances back into the stones, because the wind took the numbers faster than the sun could bleach them. Travellers who could not read still knew to stop at a freshly cut stone, and that was the whole of his trade.

One April a woman came walking from the east with a goat on a rope and a boy asleep across her shoulders. She asked why the stones he had cut in autumn carried a small dark mark, a dot above and a little hook beneath. He told her it was the mark for a pause, a place where a sentence could stop to breathe and still mean to go on. She laughed and said the road had no such thing, only ends. He pointed to the next stone, where he had cut the mark for a man named Ruben, who had buried his wife at the well at Deadwater and then carried on walking west.

She stayed the night in his hut. In the morning she had scratched her own mark into the lime plaster of his door with the end of a tin spoon, and beside it, in the careful capitals of someone who had learned letters late, she had written MY STORY ISN'T OVER. Teodor rode out to check the stones and found the words had worn away on the wind by noon. The mark on the door was still there when he came back, a small dark dot, and the goat was standing under it, chewing.
