Mrs Pryce on the fourth floor says the lift in Harcourt House has been broken since March, so you will have taken the stairs again, all eleven flights with a carrier bag in each hand. I know because I was on the landing when the bottom of your bag gave way and a tin of pears went bouncing off towards the bins. I caught it. You laughed, and I have been trying to work out ever since why I didn't just say hello.

The pears were the start of it. You gathered the rest of the tins, I found the lid under a pram, and we stood on the cold concrete comparing notes about the man who leaves his boots by the recycling. You told me you had come to the block to look for a cousin who moved out before you were born. I told you I had come for the quiet. Neither of us had planned to be standing there at half past six with the light going orange through the stairwell window.

Over the weeks that followed I kept finding you in places I had no reason to be: the launderette on Sunday, the queue at the post office, the bench by the car park where the pigeons fight over crusts. Every time, the word I had been turning over for years seemed to fit a little better. Happy accident, my nan called it. She said the best things arrive sideways, like a dropped tin of pears.

I wrote this out on the back of a council notice, because I did not trust my nerve for anything longer. Come up to fourteen on Thursday. Bring the pears if you like. I will take the stairs with you.
