Black fine line script reading Family within an infinity loop, with three small birds, tattooed on the top of a foot.

Family script with infinity loop and birds on a foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the word Family in flowing cursive script, with the letters joined by a large infinity loop that wraps around the word. Three small bird silhouettes sit to the right of the loop. The linework is thin and single-tone, in black or dark blue ink, with no shading or colour, and the photo is taken close up on a pale skin tone against a textured white background.

The big top at Hollis and Daughters had lost its centre pole the winter before, so Mam had us sleeping under the canvas in the hay wagons, and every morning I counted the patches on the roof before I counted anything else. Fourteen by February. Dad said a circus was only ever a tent with ambition, and ambition was cheaper than thread.

The flying act was three of us: Dad on the bar, my aunt Rosa on the catch, and me, still too small for anything but the swing. We rehearsed in the wet grass behind the generator. Rosa had a rule that we must leave the platform together and come back to the net in the same breath, like swallows turning over a field, and nobody ever had to be told why.

In April the council man came with a clipboard and a face like a shut gate. Dad walked him past the ring to see the seating, where a whole row had gone soft with rot. Afterwards Dad sat on the trunk with his hands between his knees. 'We'll go on till the canvas goes,' he said, 'and then we'll go on without it.' I wanted to ask where without it was, but Rosa was already chalking her hands.

On the last night we flew without the net. Nobody had planned it; Rosa just nodded at the rigging and we went up, the three of us falling and catching and falling, the lamps swinging in a long loop above the sawdust. When we came down the crowd was four people and a dog, and none of them were clapping. We were still holding hands. That was the act.
