Script quote tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line script tattoo reads I'll be seeing you... in black ink, running diagonally across the skin. The thin, even linework has a handwritten feel, with the capital I and the ellipsis finishing the phrase. The warm, close-up photograph is slightly soft and taken at an angle, with a metal bracelet at the top edge.

The bridge at Lusk Ferry has one customs hut, one kettle and one man who has never once smiled at you, so you have learned to read his stamp instead. Today he brings it down twice on your page, hard, the way you have seen him mark the papers of people who will not be coming back this way. He slides your passport across the counter without a word, which is his way of saying go.

On the far bank your sister is waving a handkerchief she bought in Antwerp for exactly this purpose. You cannot hear her over the lorries, but you know what she is calling, because she called it at the station and because it is what you wrote on the back of the envelope you pushed through her letterbox at four that morning: I'll be seeing you...

Halfway across, the planks change colour from grey to the pale green of the other country's paint, and the wind comes up off the water smelling of coal smoke and wet wool. You keep one hand on the rail. A child on a bicycle rings a bell at you from the wrong side of the barrier, and you ring back without thinking, which is how you know you are no longer at home.

At the far hut a different clerk studies your papers for longer than you would like. He asks where you are going. You tell him the truth, a town you have never seen, where your sister will be waiting at the kerb with a paper bag of pears. He nods, stamps again and hands the page back, the ink still tacky, so that when you fold it the words smudge against the crease. The ellipsis is the part you will keep, three small dots that mean the sentence was left open on purpose.
