The travelling show of Harrow and Dunmore had been going down the roads for forty years when the money finally ran out in a field outside Wenlock. She would not run. When the ringmaster tried her on the tanbark she stood with her ears forward and her weight settled, and the crowd, which had come mostly out of pity, went quiet without being asked. Dunmore's granddaughter, Pell, who was nine and did the sums in the back of the ticket book, said the horse knew something nobody else did. Her grandfather said that was nonsense and went to sit on the caravan steps with his pipe unlit.
On the last night a wind came off the hills and took the centre pole. Canvas fell in folds over the sawdust, the lamps swung, and the ticket holders shrieked and ran. Serenity did not move. She stood in the middle of the wreck with the cloth settling around her like snow, and the wind dropped as if someone had closed a door.
Pell said afterwards it was the stillness that saved them. Dunmore only said the mare had been paid for in advance and had never once asked for anything. They sold the wagon in spring and kept the horse, and the name went with her, written in loops on a card nailed to her stable door.
