Her nephew Tomasz had come to Ramsgate that summer to learn the trade from her, sign-writing for the harbour chandlers. He had hoped for gold leaf and gilt lettering. Instead she had him paint the same mark forty times on scrap ply, the way the Hastings fishermen's wives had taught her to mark their pots: two coils turned in toward each other, one hand pulling the other back to the sea.

On the last evening the tide was out and the boats lay on their sides in the mud. Ada pointed at a spiral he had botched, the centre pinched too tight, and said the centre was where you kept the thing you didn't want the sea to take. He asked what that was. She wiped the brush on her apron and said, "Your nerve, mostly," and began the second coil herself.

He worked until the light went. When he finally held the board up, the two spirals sat side by side on the white ground, and for a moment they looked like something carried up out of the water and set down carefully, claws folded, waiting for the next wave to decide what it was owed.
