Seven chakra symbols down the spine
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical column of seven chakra symbols runs down the centre of a bare back, with an Om symbol in a lotus at the top and six further symbols below. Each motif has a clean, thin outline with simple shading inside the lotus petals and geometric shapes. The ink is solid black on warm skin, and the subject lies on white bedding, which keeps the design clearly visible.

The lamp on Scarrow Head has seven landings between the store and the gallery, and my father painted a mark on the wall of each before he went out on the Bristol boat and never came home. By the winter I turned fourteen I could name them the way other boys named football sides. A square with a crescent beneath it. A downward triangle. A six-pointed star knotted inside a ring. Then the lotus on the lamp room door, with the old sign for OM curled in its middle, which Mam said meant the climb was finished and you could stop.

Nobody on the rock believed her, least of all the relief man from the mainland, who sat in our kitchen eating our bread and telling me the brass needed polishing every Tuesday. He wanted the stair scrubbed, the wicks trimmed and the log kept in ink. I kept mine in pencil, because pencil rubs out and the sea doesn't argue with it. Each night the fog rolled in off the Atlantic and swallowed the rail, and I climbed with one palm flat on the cold wall, counting the marks by touch the way Dad must have done when he was learning the stair.
On the night the Bristol boat limped back into the harbour without him, the fog was so thick I lost count at the fourth landing and had to start again from the bottom. I reached the top with my fingers numb and the lamp already turning. I leaned against the brass and let the beam go out over the water, and for the first time I understood the marks were never for finding the light. They were for finding the way back down.
