Seven lotus flower designs in black line work

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows seven separate ornamental lotus designs arranged in a loose grid on a plain white background. Each motif uses fine black outlines with detailed inner petals, dots, scrolls and teardrop shapes, with no shading or fill. The designs vary in size and symmetry, and all are drawn in black ink only.

We were heading for Tarfaya on the coast road when the wiper blade gave up, so we pulled in beside a shuttered petrol station and waited for a lorry driver called Hamid to come past with a spare. He looked at the sheets over my shoulder and laughed. Every lotus, he said, was a little door. The outer petals kept the heat out and the teardrops let the good air in. My father said that was nonsense sold to tourists. Hamid only shrugged and tapped the largest one, its scrolls curling off the edge like smoke.

Three days later the van was fixed and we were back on the road, and I noticed the middle sheet was gone. My father had torn it out and taped it to the dashboard where the sun could not reach it. Nothing else had changed, except that the dust on the windscreen had settled into a fine pale line along its edge, following every curl of the scroll, as if someone had traced it there with a finger.
