Six mandala designs on a flash sheet
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
Six circular mandala designs are arranged in two rows of three on a plain white background. Each has a symmetrical floral and geometric pattern built from fine black linework, with some petal, teardrop and scalloped forms and areas of dotted detail. The designs are all rendered in solid black ink with no colour, and each sits separately with even spacing across the sheet.

At three in the morning on Ward Seven, Bernadette Quayle had been drawing the same circle for twenty minutes. The obs were done, the tea had gone cold on the trolley, and the only sound was the drip stand creaking in bay two. She had started on the back of a spare discharge form with a fineliner she had taken from the education room, and she began where her grandmother had taught her to shell peas, at the middle, working outward so nothing got missed.

Her grandmother had also said the best patterns looked as if they could keep going past the edge of the paper. Bernadette drew petals, then teardrops nested inside the petals, then a ring of tiny dots that took longest because each one had to be placed by hand. Around quarter past three a buzzer sounded from side room four. She capped the pen and left it on the desk beside the sharps bin. The man in four wanted water and a argument about the football, and she gave him both before she went back to her chair.
By the end of the shift the form had been filled. She had not planned six of them, but each hour since midnight had produced another, and no two came out the same, because she had never been able to repeat a pattern once her hand had moved on. At handover the day staff pinned the sheet to the noticeboard and asked whose it was. Bernadette looked at the six dark rings in their neat row and said it was nobody's in particular, just what the night looked like once it had been left alone long enough to settle.
