Small black crown on the hip
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small crown silhouette in solid black ink sits on the side of the lower abdomen. It has three points, each finished with a dot, and a flat, filled base. The skin tone is warm and the image is taken at close range, with a hand and the waistband of clothing visible at the edges.

Mr Pellow stood at the gate with his hat in his hands the whole time, the way he does when the takings are short. He won't say the figure out loud, but I counted the cash box myself, and it would not buy a decent pair of boots.

The old stencil is still in the tack trunk, under the spare sequins and the bent tent pegs. It is a little crown with three points, each tipped with a dot, cut from a sheet of oiled card by someone who knew his business. Pellow's father used it to mark every poster and every ticket stub for forty years, so the crowds would know which bills were genuine. The black paint has worn thin at the base, where the roller used to press down hardest.
I asked Pellow on Monday if I could keep it. He laughed and said a crown is no use to a circus with no king. Then he gave it to me anyway, and I think he was glad someone wanted it. I have pressed it onto the back of this letter so you can see. Don't frown at the smudge. It is the nearest I will ever come to a crown, and I am taking it to Brighton on the train with the rest of my things.
