Shaded feather tattoo on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A single feather runs diagonally across the side of the torso, with its quill towards the upper right and the vane tapering to a point at the lower left. The feathering is rendered with soft shading and fine strands, giving the barbs depth and a slightly three-dimensional look. The tattoo is in black and grey on a light skin tone, with a hand and grey top at the edge of the frame.

The albatross had been following us for nine days when Mr Pryce finally lost his temper and threw the bread overboard. It came down on the water like a wet sheet, and the bird ignored it, circling the stern with its wings held stiff as a pair of oars. I watched from the taffrail with a bucket in my hands and thought it looked more tired than proud.

On the tenth morning it dropped a single feather onto the deck, grey-brown and long as my forearm. The bosun said it was bad luck to keep one aboard, so I did what any apprentice with a sense of his own future would do: I hid it inside my oilskin and carried it below to my bunk, where the lamp swung and the vane caught the light and trembled every time the hull shuddered.

We raised Valparaíso eleven weeks after that. I left the ship with eleven shillings, a letter to my mother I had not finished, and the feather pressed flat inside it. The letter got finished in a boarding house on Cerro Alegre. The feather I kept, though the barbs had frayed by then, and I could not have said why I could not throw it away.

Years later, a woman at a harbourside stall in Bristol told me the bird had been following the ship because it was looking for its mate, lost off the Horn. I did not believe her. I only smiled and turned the feather over, and found the quill still strong, as though whatever had flown it had only paused.
