Script lettering on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A person holds a black vintage twin lens camera in their right hand, with a single word in fine black cursive script running vertically along the forearm. The lettering has thin, fluid strokes with varied line weight and sits just above a yellow and green woven bracelet at the wrist. The muted grey background and soft, even light keep the focus on the tattoo and the camera.

The first roll came back from the chemist in Kentish Town as a mess of grey doors and somebody's thumb. The third roll was different. It had the canal at dusk, the lock gates half open, and a heron standing in the shallows as if it had been told the bus was late. The paper rose in the developer like something surfacing from a long sleep.
The thing nobody warned me about is that the viewfinder on these shows the world upside down, so you learn to read the scene backwards before you can frame it properly. It took me most of the term. Every shot began as a reversed picture and only became true once I trusted the glass. I think that is what you meant about patience, the thing you were always going on about when I was small.
I've pinned the heron above the sink, the right way up for once. Tell Mum I'm eating properly and that I'll come home at Easter with the camera and a whole box of prints. Keep the kettle warm for me.
