The ring went into the sea the morning the banns were read, and Tomas Velez swore on his mother's bread knife that he had not been careless with it. His bride, Inês, said nothing. She only watched the grey water from the harbour wall while the boats came in low with pilchards and the gulls followed them up the slipway.

Everyone in Porthcaddy knew what lived past the breakwater. Old Bran Keel had lost two dories to a female shark he called the Widow, a beast with a jaw like a cellar door and rows of teeth set like nails in a coffin lid. Tomas went out at slack water with a line baited with mackerel, and he did not come back for three days.
When he did, he came up the slipway holding his left hand flat before him, as if it carried something hot. The ring was on his finger, dull and warm. Beside it, wrapped round the knuckle, the Widow's mouth had closed. Her teeth had pressed a grey hollow into the skin, and the hollow was open, snout lifted, bared in a silent laugh. Inês took the hand and turned it to the lamplight. "She has kept a piece of you," she said. "Now we will see if you keep your word."
They were married at the next spring tide with the bread knife laid on the table for luck. Each year after, Tomas kept that hand under the cloth at dinner, and nobody asked him why. The fishermen say the Widow still works the bay, and that she opens her jaws whenever a wedding boat passes, as if to remind the bride that the sea keeps its share.
