Realistic wolf head on a finger
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a hand with a wolf's head tattooed on the middle finger, facing forward with its ears at the knuckle end. The face is shaded in soft greys with fine hatching in the fur, and the eyes and nose are sharply detailed. The plain dark background and light striped surface keep the focus on the tattoo.

The spade strikes something that rings, not wood and not stone, and you kneel in the cut bank with rain running down your collar to brush the peat away. It is a skull, long and narrow, about the size of a cupped palm, with a crack along the brow where either a blow or the bog once got at it. Your grandmother used to say the mire keeps what it takes, and that it keeps things for a reason, and you feel foolish for thinking of her now with the wet earth under your nails.

Mrs Gunn at the post office says the last wolf on Harra was shot in 1743 by a man called Eachann Ross, who was paid in cattle and never again slept a night dry. You carry the skull to the joiner's shed behind the kirk, wrapped in a feed sack, and Tam looks at it over his glasses for a long time before he hands you a gouge and a block of driftwood. Carve what the bones tell you, he says, and go home before the tide.
It takes three nights. You trace the ridge above the eyes, then the set of the jaw, then the fur in short, careful strokes that Tam says are too neat and then, after a look, says are fine. On the third night the wind drops and across the sound you hear the ferry's horn, and you lift the lamp to find you have cut the eyes to face seaward, as if the wolf is waiting for a boat it already knows will not come.
At first light you set the carving on the sea wall with its back to the village. The ferry comes round the point with its wake spreading white behind it, and the wolf watches it go, and nothing on Harra looks back.
