Script quote on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet rest on a wooden surface in front of dark trees, with sunlight warming the skin. A thin black cursive script runs up the outer ankle, with the phrase reading as a single line of connected letters. The ink is a single dark tone against warm skin, and the shallow depth of field keeps the tattoo as the clear focus of the frame.

The telegraph office on Fore Street closed at six, but Mr Abel Pinnock kept the lamp lit until the last card was copied fair, because Miss Harriet Vane had asked for her words in ink rather than print, and she had paid a shilling extra for the trouble.

She had brought the sentence written on the back of a tide table, a line she had clearly read many times and could not yet say aloud. Abel took up his steel nib, dipped it, and let the strokes run as they came, joining each letter to the next so the phrase would not fall apart into pieces. The lamp hissed. Outside, a cart wheel knocked against the kerb twice and went quiet.
When the card was finished she held it to the window and tilted it so the ink caught the last grey light. You've joined every letter, she said. It doesn't look like anyone wrote it. Abel told her that was the whole art of a fair hand: the words belonged to whoever had composed them, and the writer only carried them across the distance.
She paid him, folded the card into her glove, and walked down toward the harbour where the Swanage ferry was already taking on its last crates. Abel wiped his nib and found, on the blotter, a faint reversed copy of the final loop where the wet ink had kissed the paper, and he left it there.
