Nobody in Tredegar Row said the word for what had happened at the Number Four shaft. We said the cage, or we said Tuesday, or we said nothing and pushed the bread across the table. Dad had come up the lift with his cap in his fist and a bruise on his cheek the shape of a thumb, and he told Mam the roof had held. It had not held. I had seen the men carry Evan Hughes out past the washhouse on a door, and I had seen Dad's face when the foreman came to the step.

On Sunday I took the mended boots down to the cobbler's and found the foreman's boy sitting on the wall outside, whittling. He looked at me, then at the gap in my teeth, and he pressed one grubby finger against his mouth and shook his head. I understood him. I walked home with the boots under my arm and the secret sitting between my ribs like a stone.

That night I finally asked Dad what he had seen down there. He didn't answer. He only lifted his hand, index finger raised, and held it there until the kitchen clock ticked over into the next day. Shhh, the gesture said. Some things a family keeps in the dark, the way the pit keeps coal.
