Semicolon tattoo on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a clenched fist raised towards the top of the frame against a plain light background. A small, solid black semicolon sits on the inner wrist, with its dot and comma shape rendered in smooth, dense ink. Several beaded and braided bracelets are worn just below the tattoo, and the lighting is soft and even.

Nobody had written the rest of the sentence until Mrs Okonedo came back from the hospital with her bag over one shoulder and a stub of chalk in her coat pocket. She chalked a small dot above a comma on the wall beside the doors, then stood back and looked at it the way she looked at a bad bus timetable.

Her grandson Tomasz, nine and certain he knew everything, asked what it meant. "It means the thought isn't finished," she said. "A full stop would be a door shut. This one says wait, there's more coming." He told the lads at the bottom of the stairs, and by Friday the wall was covered in marks, dots and commas and little hooked tails, each one chalked by someone who had something to carry up eleven floors.
The council sent a man to scrub them off. He arrived with a bucket and a clipboard and stood at the lift for a long time, reading. Then he took out a pen and, very neatly, added a semicolon beneath the red writing. Nobody saw him do it. Mrs Okonedo found it the next morning and said nothing, only pressed the button and waited, and the lift came up, slow and grinding, as though it had been thinking about it.
