Musical notes on an inner wrist
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a clenched fist raised against a bright red background, with a silver pendant on a chain hanging from the fingers. A row of black musical notes, including a bass clef, sits on the inner wrist, drawn with solid black linework and no shading. The red backdrop is the only colour in the frame, while the tattoo itself is black ink.

The fiddler would not play the bride's tune, and the whole of Aldcombe waited on him while the candles guttered down the length of the barn. The air smelled of wet straw and burnt sugar from the cake. Tobiah Penrose had been paid in advance, in good coin and a side of bacon, and the miller's daughter stood at the door with her hand on her father's arm and her veil already lifted from her face. He tuned the strings again. He tightened the bow. Still the notes would not come.

His grandmother had left him the fiddle with one instruction: never play a tune for anyone who had not first given a note of their own. So he had gone round the tables asking for one. The baker gave him a sigh, the vicar gave him a line of Latin, and the miller gave him the silver chain from his own neck, which Tobiah wound about his fist like a promise. He wrote each gift in the margin of his song book, a crotchet or a quaver apiece, with the bass clef at the head of them, the low fixed point the rest of the tune hung from.
The miller's daughter came across the boards herself, barefoot on the cold floor, and held out her wrist. She had a row of marks there already, drawn in soot and needle-prick the night before, waiting for the tune she had asked him to play. "You're one short," she said. "Mine's the high note. Put it in."
He did. The fiddle sang the bride's tune for the first time that night, and the candles stood up straight.
