Shhh script on a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A finger is held to pink glossed lips, with the word Shhh followed by three dots tattooed along it in black cursive script. The letters are drawn in solid black ink with smooth, even linework and slight shading. The warm, softly blurred background and skin tones keep the focus on the lettering.

Hush now, and mind the stair, because the old ones say the lamp can hear you on it. Sit where Nan Coyle used to sit, on the third step, where the wet doesn't come through. Good. Now you'll want to know why the keeper at Skerryvale Light gave his daughter a word instead of a sweet.

Her name was Ada, and she was ten the winter the fog came in off the Minch and stayed six weeks. Her father rang the bell by hand every half minute, but the bell had a crack in it and sounded more like a cough than a call, and the fishermen out past the skerries said they couldn't tell rock from boat in that noise. So Ada was given the listening. Whenever a horn came thin through the murk, she lifted one finger to her lips and the whole kitchen had to go still: the kettle, the dog, her brothers, even the clock on the dresser.
One night her father forgot himself. A horn sounded, faint and to the north, and he started shouting to the men on the rocks as though volume could carry through wool. Ada stood up on the bench and said it the way she'd been taught, low and fierce, and he stopped with his mouth open. In the quiet the lamp swept round, the bell gave its cough, and a small boat came nosing out of the white with its lantern swinging, close enough to touch the wall.
So when the sea goes flat tonight, and it will, you'll hear the lamp counting its turns, and that's the only sound worth your attention. Sit still and let it count. Shhh.
