Ship and wave in a pint glass on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A sailing ship with billowing sails rides a wave that rises out of a pint glass filled with stippled liquid and bubbles. A small cloud with dotted rain lines sits in the upper right above the glass. The bold outlines are combined with dense dot shading in the glass, waves and cloud, and the design is centred on the forearm.

Sit yourself down before the foam goes flat, because I'll not tell it twice and Mother Dunn will charge you for the stool. Forty-one boats went out of Scarrow that October, and the Gannet Lass was the last to come in low in the water with her nets full, her skipper singing so the whole quay could hear.

Her skipper was Eli Harker, a man who never once left a glass unfinished. He'd lift his mild to the sea before every trip, and the sea, being fair-minded in its way, took his lads one night in a squall off the Dogger and kept the Gannet Lass too. Eli came ashore alone, clinging to a plank from her wheelhouse. Old Ada Crane, who kept the Anchor then, poured him a pint and he would not touch it. She set it on the bar anyway, and every night after she poured one more for the boat.

Nobody thought much of it until the winter the herring came back thick as bruises under the pier. Ada swore the glass fizzed harder on the nights it was full, that bubbles climbed the side like crew up a rope, and one Thursday a grey swell rose out of the head of it, carrying a three-masted barque with every sail set. Ada wiped the bar, said nothing, and poured the next one with a steady hand.

The fleet still sails from Scarrow, and that glass still sits on the shelf above the till. If you watch the foam long enough you'll see the ship turn her bow towards the harbour mouth. Ada used to say she was only sailing home, and that a glass left full on a dry night is the sea's way of keeping its accounts.
