Ship in a bottle with banner on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A ship in a bottle sits at the centre, with an orange scroll banner across the neck reading STEADY AS SHE GOES. Purple flowers, green leaves and a red and black ship's wheel frame the bottle, and the ship's sails are shaded in grey and black. Bold outlines and solid colour fills give the piece a classic flash look against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mate wanted the brig rigged before the tide turned, and Tobias Wenn had until the lamp guttered to thread her mainsail through a neck no wider than a thumb. He kept the bottle wedged between two coal sacks in the forward hold of the Lindisfarne Belle, her hull still grey with Tyneside dust, and worked with a bent pin and a spool of black silk.

Nobody aboard believed the ship in a bottle was his doing. They said it was luck, or some Portuguese trick off a cargo boat. But his grandfather had taught him that a ship only sailed straight when every line pulled against its neighbour, and that a man at the wheel never chose the weather, only the next small correction. So when the pin slipped and the topsail folded like a dropped handkerchief, Tobias did not swear. He breathed out, set the sail again, and told himself what the helmsman always said: steady as she goes.

The lamp went out with the last strand pulled tight. He sealed the cork with pitch, slid a strip of paper bearing the boat's name inside the glass, and packed the bottle in straw for his sister in Shields, who had asked for nothing except something that would not sink.

A letter came back in March. Maria had hung the bottle in her window above the sink, where the morning light caught the glass. She wrote that the brig still stood upright on its sea of pitch, and that she had taken to saying the banner words each time she unlocked the door, though she had never once been to sea.
