A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wheel is still in the chest where you left it, wrapped in the oiled sailcloth your mother stitched, and the anchor stone is still tied to the rope by the door. Hektor the shipwright swore that rope would outlast both of you. He was wrong about that, as he was wrong about most things that cost a copper.

You were sixteen when the Aigaios sailed out of Miletus without the steersman who had promised to teach you the star paths. Your brother took the oar bench instead, and it was he who came home with pitch black under his nails and rope burns that never quite healed. You remember the night he showed you the wheel's spokes, six of them, each counted by lamplight, and said a helmsman steers by the thing he cannot hold. You thought he was boasting.

Then the storm off Naxos took the mast, and the anchor was the only thing holding the hull while the sea came over the rail. You cut the cable yourself, because the stone was worth more than the cargo of wine and the men under the deck were worth more than either. Nobody argued with you after that. They called you the anchor-cutter, half mockery and half fear.

Forty years on, you still wake to the creak of a hull that is no longer there. The wheel stays in the chest and the anchor stays by the door. Some nights the tide climbs the lane outside, and you let it come as far as the step, and you count the spokes in the dark until the water goes back down.
