Matching anchor tattoos on two hands
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are held together, each showing a small anchor tattoo on the back of the hand. The anchors are drawn in fine black linework with stippled dotted accents along the shank and crossbar. The image is monochrome, with soft lighting and a shallow focus that keeps the anchors sharp against the surrounding skin.

In the hard winter at Coldharbour Farm the beck froze so thick that Ada Pennock carried the milk across it on a sledge, while her brother Tom walked behind with the lantern. Their father had gone south for work and sent no word since Martinmas. The ewes were heavy, the hay was low, and the hens had stopped laying.

Ada had a length of rope and an old iron anchor that a sailor had left at the inn in the valley in lieu of rent. She had Tom lash the anchor to the gatepost so the gate would not tear loose in the gales. Every morning before going out to the byre, the two of them pressed their hands together against the cold iron, the way their mother had taught them to say goodnight.
On the ninth night the snow came sideways and the beck groaned under the ice. Tom did not come in from the byre. Ada followed the lantern light and found him on the frozen ground with his hand pinned under a slipped chain. She had no strength to lift the iron, so she did what their mother had done for the lambs. She pressed her palm to his and counted the ewes aloud, one, two, three, until he answered her and the numbers were enough to keep them both awake.
At first light the milk cart from the valley found them asleep in the straw, hands still joined, the chain sitting slack on the gatepost. Their father never came back, but the farm held through the thaw, and the ewes lambed in the spring as if nothing had happened.
