Matching anchor tattoos on two wrists

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two inner wrists sit side by side, each with a black and grey anchor tattoo. The left anchor is plain, while the right anchor has a bow tied around its shank. Both use bold outlines with soft grey shading on the flukes and shank, and the designs are centred on each wrist.

Nobody in Saltcombe agreed on who first walked into Ferris's back room with a tide table folded in her pocket and an anchor sketched on the back of it. Ada said it was her idea. Lil said it was hers, and she had the scrape on her knuckle from the argument to prove it. Old Ferris only sighed, wiped his needles on a rag and asked which of them would be sitting still first.

They were both nineteen that spring, both sick of the cannery and the same three boys, and both certain the sea was the only honest thing on the coast. The plan was simple. Lil would crew on her uncle's trawler for the summer, and Ada would keep the mooring lines turning on the quay. Whatever happened to one of them, the other would wear the matching mark, so the sea would have to answer to both of them.

Lil sailed on the Tuesday tide. Ada stayed behind with the ink still stinging and a grey ribbon from her mother's sewing box. Every morning she tied it round the shank of her anchor, and every evening she walked down to the harbour wall to count the boats coming in against the lamps.

In September the trawler limped home one man short, and Lil came up the quay with her sleeve pushed back over her plain anchor. Ada untied the ribbon, pressed it flat between two palms and held out her own wrist. "You'll have to get yours dressed up as well," she said. Lil laughed until she cried, and the ribbon went back into the sewing box, still knotted, ready for the next tide.
